Slow-healing leg wounds may be a sign of vein disease.
Trust Texas Vascular Institute for expert ulcer treatment and prevention.

WHAT ARE
VENOUS ULCERS
Venous ulcers are slow-healing wounds that form when poor blood flow causes skin tissue to break down, most often on the lower legs. They can become chronic if not properly treated, but expert care can restore skin health and prevent recurrence.
SYMPTOMS OF VENOUS ULCERS
- Open, shallow wounds near the ankles
- Pain or tenderness around the sore
- Skin discoloration or dark patches
- Swelling or heaviness in the legs
- Itching or burning sensation
- Hardened skin or scar-like texture

Causes and Risk Factors
Chronic venous insufficiency
Poor circulation (including diabetes)
Obesity
Past leg injuries or surgeries
Reduced mobility or aging
History of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)Why won’t my leg wound heal properly?
If a sore on your lower leg doesn’t improve after weeks, it could be a venous ulcer—caused by chronic vein damage and poor blood flow. These wounds need specialized care to prevent infection and complications. The earlier treatment begins, the better the chance of full healing.

Healing Wounds Caused by Vein Disease
Venous Ulcers require a combined approach of wound care and vein treatment. Endovenous vein closure treatments are a specialized expertise at Texas Vascular Institute. Elimination of ulcers by Radiofrequency Ablation, Injectable Microfoam, or VenaSeal are effective treatments performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient procedure.
Radiofrequency Ablation
The ClosureFast endovenous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) catheter is intended for endovascular closure of blood vessels inpatients with superficial vein reflux.

Injectable Microfoam
This treatment involves injecting a microfoam that causes veins to close. Varithena isminimally invasive – there’s no need for
incisions or stitches, and many people only
need a single treatment to see results.

VenaSeal
The VenaSeal procedure delivers a smallamount of a specially formulated medical adhesive to seal – or close – the diseased vein, rerouting blood to nearby healthy veins and providing symptom relief.
