What is Varicocele?

Varicose veins within the loose bag of skin that holds the testicles (scrotum). These veins transport oxygen-depleted blood from the testicles. A varicocele occurs when blood pools in the veins rather than circulating efficiently out of the scrotum.Symptoms of VaricoceleAche or discomfort in scrotum or testicles
Mass or bulge in scrotum, like a "bag of worms"
Swelling, heaviness in the scrotum or testicles
Smaller affected testicle
Infertility
Dilated veins

Varicocele Causes and
Risk Factors

Varicocele often develops during puberty, a time when blood flow to the testicles increases as they grow. The exact reason why some people develop varicoceles and others don’t isn’t fully understood, but anatomy plays a major role.

Varicoceles can lead to reduced sperm quality and infertility, testicular shrinkage (atrophy), and persistent discomfort or a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum. In some cases, the enlarged veins become visibly noticeable, which may cause cosmetic concerns or emotional stress, especially when linked to fertility challenges.

Varicocele Treatment

Varicocele Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that closes off blood flow to the affected vein(s), causing the varicocele to shrink and die off.Varicocele Embolization Procedure
An image-guided procedure where a tiny catheter is inserted through a skin nick at the top of the leg and passed into the problem vein in the abdomen. Small platinum coils and/or a liquid substance called a sclerosant are deposited blocking the abnormal pressure and curing the varicocele without a surgical incision.
