What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?
Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) happens when the tiny valves in your veins become weak or damaged, making it harder for blood to flow back up to your heart. Instead, blood may move slowly, flow backward, or pool in your veins, especially in your legs.CVI is most common in the lower legs, where gravity makes circulation more challenging.

What Are Chronic Venous Insufficiency Symptoms?
- Leg Itching and Burning
- Swelling in the lower legs or ankles
- Heaviness or tiredness in the legs
- Varicose veins
- Skin discoloration or thickening
- Ulcers (in severe cases)

Chronic Venous Insufficiency Causes & Risk Factors
CVI is most common in women over 50, due to hormonal changes, pregnancy, and varicose veins. While aging naturally weakens vein valves, several other factors can increase your risk:
- Standing or sitting for long periods (e.g., nurses, teachers, office workers)
- Excess body weight, which adds pressure to leg veins
- Pregnancy or multiple pregnancies
- Family history of varicose veins or vein disease
- History of blood clots or deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Smoking or poor circulation

Chronic Venous Insufficiency Treatments
At Texas Vascular Institute, treatment starts with a comprehensive exam using advanced diagnostic tools. This includes checking circulation in your ankles and lower legs, assessing visible symptoms, and using vascular ultrasound to identify blood clots or vein weakness.Based on your diagnosis, we create a personalized treatment plan that may include:
- Compression stockings
- Lifestyle changes to improve circulation
- Sclerotherapy
- ClosureFast™ thermal vein closure
- VenaSeal™ adhesive vein closure
