What is Venous Stasis Dermatitis
Venous stasis dermatitis is a skin condition caused by poor circulation in the lower legs. When blood pools in the veins, it can lead to inflammation and visible skin changes. Early care is essential to prevent more serious complications.
SYMPTOMS OF VENOUS STASIS DERMATITIS
- Reddish-brown skin discoloration
- Itching or burning sensation
- Thin, fragile skin on the lower legs
- Swelling in the ankles or calves
- Skin thickening or hardening
- Open sores or slow-healing wounds

Causes and Risk Factors
Chronic venous insufficiency
Swelling in the lower legs
Obesity
Immobility or limited leg movement
Aging
History of blood clots (DVT)Can skin changes on my legs really be caused by vein problems?
Absolutely. Discoloration, itchiness, or thin, fragile skin on the legs often results from poor circulation due to vein disease. When caught early, venous stasis dermatitis can be managed effectively with vein treatments and skin care. Delaying care, however, can lead to open wounds or ulcers.

Managing Skin Changes from Poor
Circulation
Venous Stasis Dermatitis is best managed by treating the underlying venous insufficiency. Once bloodflow is restored, the skin can begin to heal and inflammation decreases. Minimally invasive endovenous vein closure treatments are an expertise at Texas Vascular Institute. Elimination of vein insufficiency to treat Venous Stasis Dermatitis by Radiofrequency Ablation, Injectable Microfoam, or VenaSeal are effective treatments performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient procedure.
Radiofrequency Ablation
The ClosureFast endovenous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) catheter is intended for endovascular closure of blood vessels inpatients with superficial vein reflux.

Injectable Microfoam
This treatment involves injecting a microfoam that causes veins to close. Varithena isminimally invasive – there’s no need for
incisions or stitches, and many people only
need a single treatment to see results.

VenaSeal
The VenaSeal procedure delivers a smallamount of a specially formulated medical adhesive to seal – or close – the diseased vein, rerouting blood to nearby healthy veins and providing symptom relief.
