What is skin pigmentation?

Skin pigmentation refers to the appearance of blotches or patches of discoloration on the skin. Individuals, both men and women, who experience conditions such as venous insufficiency or venous stasis dermatitis often observe noticeable changes in the skin surrounding their veins. Additionally, skin pigmentation can sometimes serve as a sign of more serious underlying issues

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF VEIN
DAMAGE OR DISEASE?

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) occurs when the valves in the leg veins don't function properly, causing blood to pool in the legs and potentially leading to swelling, pain, and other symptoms. This condition is not typically life-threatening, but it can significantly impact quality of life.
  • Enlarged veins (varicose veins) Water retention causing
  • Swelling in your lower legs and feet
  • Achy legs
  • Heavy feeling legs
  • Itchy legs
  • Restless legs, especially at night
  • Leg cramps
  • Sores or ulcers (venous ulcers) that don’t heal
When chronic venous insufficiency goes untreated, it can lead to venous stasis dermatitis. This condition is characterized by the appearance of discolored pigmentation, referred to as hemosiderin deposits, on the feet, ankles, and lower legs. Hemosiderin is a pigment formed from the breakdown of hemoglobin, an iron-rich protein found in red blood cells. Typically, the resulting skin pigmentation manifests as shades of brown, red, or dark bronze.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY
FEET, ANKLES, OR LEGS
CHANGE IN COLOR?

If your feet, ankles, or legs develop discolored blotches, or if large swaths of skin grow significantly darker, it’s important to schedule an evaluation at Texas Vascular Institute as soon as possible. If CVI and venous stasis dermatitis aren’t treated, you could end up with deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolisms, nonhealing ulcers, and other very dangerous health
conditions.

It’s crucial to consult with Texas Vascular Institute to determine the best treatment plan for yourspecific condition. Radiofrequency Ablation

The ClosureFast endovenous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) catheter is intended for endovascular closure of blood vessels in
patients with superficial vein reflux.

Injectable Microfoam

This treatment involves injecting a microfoam that causes veins to close. Varithena is
minimally invasive – there’s no need for
incisions or stitches, and many people only
need a single treatment to see results.

VenaSeal

The VenaSeal procedure delivers a small
amount of a specially formulated medical adhesive to seal – or close – the diseased vein, rerouting blood to nearby healthy veins and providing symptom relief.
