What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins occur when weak or damaged vein walls and valves cause swollen, twisted veins, usually in the legs. They often involve the saphenous veins and their tributaries, appearing enlarged and bulging under the skin.Symptoms include:
  • Swollen, twisted veins – Most commonly in the legs.
  • Aching, heaviness, or cramping – Worse after standing/the evening.
  • Swelling in legs and ankles – Caused by fluid retention.
  • Itchy, dry skin – May signal poor circulation.
  • Skin discoloration or hardening – Darkened, firm skin over time.
  • Ulcers or open sores – In severe cases, slow-healing wounds near the ankles.
  • Restless legs – Uncomfortable urge to move, especially at night.
If untreated, varicose veins can lead to chronic circulation issues.

Varicose veins Causes
and Risks

Varicose veins occur when weakened vein valves cause blood to pool, leading to swollen, twisted veins. Common causes include genetics, aging, pregnancy, prolonged standing or sitting, and obesity. Risk factors include being female, over 40, having a family history, or a sedentary lifestyle. If untreated, they can cause swelling, skin changes, ulcers, or blood clots.

MINIMALLY INVASIVE VEIN TREATMENTS

Endovenous vein closure treatments are a specialized expertise at Texas Vascular Institute. Elimination of varicose
veins by Radiofrequency Ablation, Injectable Microfoam, or VenaSeal are effective treatments performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient procedure. By safely closing down the diseased vein(s), blood is rerouted through other
nearby healthy veins, improving the pressure-driven symptoms.

Radiofrequency Ablation

The ClosureFast endovenous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) catheter is intended for endovascular closure of blood vessels in
patients with superficial vein reflux.

Injectable Microfoam

This treatment involves injecting a microfoam that causes veins to close. Varithena is
minimally invasive – there’s no need for
incisions or stitches, and many people only
need a single treatment to see results.

VenaSeal

The VenaSeal procedure delivers a small
amount of a specially formulated medical adhesive to seal – or close – the diseased vein, rerouting blood to nearby healthy veins and providing symptom relief.
